How to handle being arrested

October 18, 2010

REMEMBER YOUR RIGHTS:

– You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud.
– You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself, your car or your home.
– If you are not under arrest, you have the right to calmly leave.
– You have the right to a lawyer if you are arrested. Ask for one immediately.
– Regardless of your immigration or citizenship status, you have constitutional rights.

THINGS TO DO:

– Do stay calm and be polite.
– Do not interfere with or obstruct the police.
– Do not lie or give false documents.
– Do prepare yourself and your family in case you are arrested.
– Do remember the details of the encounter.
– Do file a written complaint or call your local ACLU if you feel your rights have been violated.

Being arrested can be very stressful for you (especially if you feel you are being arrested for something you should not be), but always remember to keep come and let the police officers do their job, acting out will only get you in more trouble.

  1. Hopefully I can avoid being arrested, I've been told that when/if they start questioning you, and you are guilty, don't say a word, count the ceiling tiles or things like that to distract yourself.

  2. hoo very got post 😀

  3. I was just recently detained at my local grocery store for shoplifting. Of course they never found what they were looking for on me, but the undercover that stepped me aside informed me that he had the right to detain me until the cops arrived. I'm pretty sure I could have just walked out.

  4. i hope this never happens to me lol!

  5. All of this is pretty common sense.

  6. Realy good to know

  7. sage advice… also, never ever confess to the cop… if you must confess, do it through your lawyer and get a better deal for it…

  10. i almost couldnt finish reading story because of that ass

  11. I saw a video on your rights and it showed me that most people get arrested and caught because they screw up somehow. For example they showed that when you get pulled over they have no right to search your car unless you let them or they see something in your car. Simply saying "I do not comply to any searches" ends that. Also NEVER admit to doing wrong if they have no proof. When an officer asks you why they you think you were pulled over do no say "I was speeding?" its not a question to them, its trying to get u to admit to it.

  24. I always love it when people just throw away their good old right to remain silent. Cops these days are too overworked so unless you did it right in front of them you are probably clear
